murakami/Nelson was part of the design build team of Clark & Sullivan / Walsh and JK Architecture for a new 110,000 square foot, LEED Gold science building at Merritt College. The facility was designed to achieve a number of goals including enhancing the student learning environment, promoting and accommodating the growth of departments and energizing the campus. The Center houses all of Merritt College’s science and health programs along with mathematics and business technology. The overall design concept encourages an open exchange of ideas, collaboration and active learning. The building shell integrates an abstraction of the human DNA sequence in the building’s sunscreen system and in a curved helix-shaped exterior stair.
